He obtained the degrees of SMHK (Sarjana Muda Hukum)/Bachelor of Law (in 1984) and SH (Sarjana Hukum)/Master of Law with a specialization in Constitutional Law (in 1986), both from the Universitas Gadjah Mada Law School. He continued his graduate studies at The University of Kentucky Department of Anthropology and received an MA (Master of Arts) degree in 1993. In 1994-1996 he had enrolled in a Ph.D. program on Resource Policy and Behavior at The School of Natural Resources and Environment, The University of Michigan [not completed].

He teaches several courses includes the Indonesian Constitutional Law and Political System, Legislative Drafting (majors), Cultural Anthropology, and Foreign Legal Terms (minors).

 

As a legal-anthropologist, he had spent considerable time dealing with several fieldworks on the issue related to state-society relations, especially in natural resources utilization. Also, he had involved in several initiatives on legal reforms (most assisted by international donor agencies, which provided technical assistantship to the Indonesian Government and or Parliament).
